Keast & Hood Structural Design Intern (Summer 2017)

Keast & Hood is a structural engineering firm founded in 1953 with offices in Washington DC, Philadelphia, and Charlottesville, Virginia. In addition to complex new structural engineering projects, the firm is a nationally recognized leader in building diagnostics and historic preservation.

The firm’s Charlottesville office (founded 2015) is growing and seeks a Structural Design Intern for the summer of 2017. Interns interested in other time periods will also be considered.

The following are desired:

  • A demonstrated enthusiasm for building design
  • Enrolled in Bachelor of Science in Civil or Architectural Engineering with structural
    concentration. Intended pursuit of Master’s degree in structural engineering preferred. Studies in the fields of architecture and/or historic preservation, in addition to an engineering degree, would be an advantage.
  • Completed courses in structural analysis and structural design, including structural steel and reinforced concrete.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of Revit / AutoCAD

Duties will include assisting staff engineers with: structural engineering analysis, design, and detailing for new construction, building renovations, and historic preservation projects; existing/historic building surveys, assessments, and reports; and various other tasks.

UVA Facilities Management Enviromental Resources (Summer 2017)

The Environmental Resources Group (ER) within UVA Facilities Management is looking to fill a paid student internship position beginning summer 2017. In this position, this person will have the opportunity to work in a professional organization that manages environmental compliance programs for UVA. Specifically ER is responsible for stormwater and air permitting programs; construction site erosion and sediment control, and stormwater pollution prevention plan inspections; stormwater BMP inspections and maintenance; stormwater management planning and design; environmental impact reviews; petroleum storage management; and many other areas. While the focus of this position will be stormwater management/engineering, this person will have opportunities to view and participate in the other programs.


  • Student at UVA graduating 2018 or later
  • Rising 3rd or 4th Year in civil/environmental engineering
  • Good academic standing
  • Excellent references from faculty and/or previous employers
  • Ability to work full-time through the summer (vacation allowed)
  • Ability to work next school year part-time (flexible – 0 to 10 hours/week)
  • Good communication skills

The Civil Intern will work as a member of a design team on multiple projects serving clients such as NYCDEP, NYC Dept. of Parks & Recreation, MTA-New York City Transit, NYCDOT, and NYSDOT. The position includes preparation of plans, detail drawing/calculation checks, estimate and quantity take-offs for projects of various sizes and complexity. The Civil department engages in several areas of design including Highway & Local Roadway design, Green Infrastructure/Stormwater management, Drainage & Grading, Utility/Facility upgrades, Feasibility studies, Transit flood mitigation and resiliency, and recreation/waterfront development. The candidate will need to be a self-motivated individual who utilizes the highest level of professionalism while performing engineering assignments.

This is an intern position for Summer 2017.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate Civil Engineering program
  • 2+ years completed toward degree
  • Attention to detail a must
  • Must possess strong problem-solving and communication skills
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD or Microstation
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3.0 GPA or higher preferred
  • Students with at least one prior internship in the AE industry preferred.
  • Preference will be given to local candidates

  • At the time of filing, the applicant must be in an accredited Engineering, Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Computer Science / Information Services Program at a university or a related field at a community college. Applicants considering a career in transportation engineering or planning are preferred.
  • An applicant must be returning to their undergraduate program or entering/continuing a graduate program in Fall 2017. For students that have graduated, an applicant can be appointed to begin work within 6 months after graduation.
